Anderson Park is a small, grassy park overlooking the Hampton Roads harbor from the Newport News water front. It offers a shallow, protected launch with lots of grassy rigging and ample parking. There is a fishing pier which is great for viewing or taking pictures from. Launch to the left of the pier and you will find a large expanse of shallow water which is sheltered from the southerly winds of the summer. Out past the pier you have access to stronger winds and deeper water.

The launch is pretty clean and booties are not required however there are a lot of weeds at times on the beach as well as growing on the bottom. Best wind directions are Northeast southward to Southwest. The closest iWindsurf sensors are is located on the south island of the Monitor-Merrimack Memorial bridge-tunnel (MMMBT) and Northeast at toward (Hampton Flats).

Directions:

Take I-64 to I-664 at the Hampton Coliseum. Take the very first exit (less than a mile) and turn left onto Powhatan Parkway. Follow it for about 1.5 miles to the waterfront, passing through several traffic lights. Watch out for the dip at Victoria Boulevardif you're pulling a trailer. Once at the water, turn right onto Chesapeake Boulevard, and go almost 2 miles to the park at the fishing pier on your left.

Good points:

Shallow water near shore, protected from strong winds out of the south, nice paved parking lot, clean sandy but weedy beach, observation pier, picnic tables across the street.

Bad Points:

Long walk to deep water, watch out for fishermen on pier.
